Fawundu works in photography, printmaking, video, sound, and assemblage. Many of her works investigate the aesthetic and spiritual aspects of water, which offers a sacred medium of memory, as well as a site of rebirth and re-engagement with omnipresent spirits. Caught the Holy Ghost, Fawundu’s contribution to Enunciated Life includes footage of waters along the Ivory Coast, the Mexican Gulf, and other locations, codifying the geographic touchpoints of diasporic African spiritual heritage. A warped version of Mahalia Jackson’s song, Come Sunday, is combined with sounds of a pentecostal service in Brooklyn, New York. Through this and other works, Fawundu excavates routes of migration and reveals the spiritual residue that remains not just in areas tied to the Middle Passage but beyond.
