KRS One and Ladybug Mecca in BK
August 22nd, 2007 under Uncategorized. [ Comments: none ]

August 3, 2007 - Blast Master KRS- One and Lady Bug Mecca totally represented in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Ladybug Mecca sang some songs from her solo album “Trip The Light Fantastic.” As a bonus, Mecca hit the crowd off with some Digable Planets favs.
KRS-One rocked hip hop from the 80’s right through to the Milleneum. KRS- One has to be one of the greatest hip-hop performers of all times…..He literally had the crowed banging their heads all the way through.. The most dynamic thing about his performance was when he reflected back 20 years ago, when he usd to sit behind the very stage that he performed on homeless. Although he was homeless, he knew one day he would be on stage, and the world would know his name. As KRS-One says, “take five minutes everyday to seeyour future.” Speak it, see it, and believe it…anything can manifest.

One.

Beyond Fierce: Photographs and Words of Black & Latino Men in the Life
Acclaimed photographer Delphine Fawundu-Buford has got a wayfarer’s inability to settle down, and it shows. Her work examining black culture has appeared in nearly every venue available; it’s adorned greeting cards, graced album covers, and hung on the walls of temples to culture like the Brooklyn Museum. Her latest work-in-progress, the photo-essay Beyond Fierce: Photographs and Words of Black & Latino Men in the Life, features images alongside text of her subjects musing on topics like gay marriage, homophobia, and religion. Fawundu-Buford has turned her roving eye toward depictions of gay black and Latino men, and seen far beyond stereotypes like the bitchy queen and creepin’ husbands on the D.L. (Shalita)

She Shootin’ Photography Collective
December 29th, 2006 under Uncategorized. [ Comments: none ]

Six of Brooklyn’s emerging women photographers invite us into their worlds through glimpses into their growing bodies of work. From candid portraiture to guerrilla documentary and street photography, the images included in She Shootin marks personal stations of these women’s photographic journeys.

The women of She Shootin have varied approaches and histories with the medium of photography:

Nsenga Knight studied filmmaking at Howard University; her intimate photographs focuses primarily on documenting the African American Muslim and Caribbean experiences of New York. Her work was exhibited in the prestigious Small Works Exhibition this year and is currently exhibited at Chelsea’s Art Gotham Gallery.

Delphine Fawundu-Buford has been composing since the early 90s; influenced by greats like Lorna Simpson and Roy DeCarava, her photography has focused on hip hop and women. She has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and International Center of Photography.

Kerika Fields is a contributing writer and photographer for the New York Amsterdam News, through event photography she has been able to build a impressive collection of candid portraiture.

Ava Griffiths approach to street photography is cinematic and reminiscent of a detailed novel, her series of elders is a warm tribute to these sages of Brooklyn.

London-native and jewelry designer, Karen Jackson fashions her photography with detail and grace just as she assembles her jewelry for her company, Ambiguous Art Jewelry.

Laylah Amatullah Barrayn is both an essayist and photographer, focusing on international travel and jazz. She is one of the photographers included in the Shootout exhibition in honor of Jack T. Franklin this August at the African-American Museum in Philadelphia.

Inspired by myriad themes, She Shootin‘ are offerings in frames that are exposures of these women’s souls.
